Historic Centre of Montemor-o-Novo - Cya On The Road

Since the middle of the 14th century, Montemor-o-Novo once confined to the inner-walls (the area inside the castle walls), started expanding, creating a new space known as “arrabalde”.This was a very accessible area, with privileged access to roads and commercial routes. Being an open area, it allowed the construction of larger and more comfortable houses. The start of the exodus is recognized in documents of the 14th century, and since then, the process started becoming more evident until the complete abandonment of the intra-walls village, in the 18th century. To visit the historic centre of Montemor-o-Novo is to enter in a complex network of streets, stairs, platforms and small plazas filled with houses built of masonry, mud walls or stone, with one or two floors, ogival doors and chimneys rising from the facades; is to discover streets that keep their early medieval structure, like the Almocreve Street or Travessa das Farizes; it is to discover architectural singularities, with special mention to the remnants of Manuelino art; is to be overwhelmed with the abundance of religious heritage, with the richness of the noble palaces of the 18th century, with the strength of the conventual presence and the admirable works in tiles and mural painting.
